A repeater is a Physical-layer device that receives an incoming signal, regenerates (reshapes and re-times) it to its original strength and quality, and retransmits it onward. It extends the maximum distance a signal can travel over a medium by compensating for attenuation, without altering the data content. Repeaters operate purely on the electrical/optical signal and have no awareness of frames, addresses, or higher-layer data.
