Network Access Layer — combines OSI's Physical and Data Link layers. Handles physical transmission of bits, framing, MAC addressing, and media access control (e.g. CSMA/CD in Ethernet).

Internet Layer — handles logical (IP) addressing and routing. IP is connectionless and best-effort; it doesn't guarantee delivery, order, or error correction on its own. ICMP reports errors (e.g. "destination unreachable"), ARP resolves IP addresses to MAC addresses, and IGMP manages multicast group membership.

Transport Layer — provides process-to-process delivery via port numbers.

  • TCP: connection-oriented (3-way handshake), reliable (ACKs + retransmission), ordered, with flow control (sliding window) and congestion control.
  • UDP: connectionless, no delivery guarantee, minimal overhead — used where speed matters more than reliability (e.g. video streaming, DNS queries).

Application Layer — the layer applications interact with directly. Absorbs OSI's Session and Presentation layer duties (session management, data formatting/encryption). Protocols include HTTP (web), SMTP (email), FTP (file transfer), and DNS (name resolution).

Each layer encapsulates the data from the layer above by prepending its own header, forming: [App data] -> [+TCP hdr] -> [+IP hdr] -> [+Frame hdr] -> bits on wire.
