Search Engine and Directory Registration

1. Why Register?

A site that is not crawled and indexed is invisible to search traffic. Registration ensures:

  1. Faster discovery of new/updated pages.
  2. Ranking signals (sitemap, structured data, business details).
  3. Inclusion in web directories (human-organised catalogues) and local/business listings.

2. How Search Engines Work (three phases)

 +---------+     +-----------+     +-----------+     +---------+
 | CRAWLER | --> | INDEXER   | --> | INDEX DB  | --> | QUERY   |
 | (spider)|     | parse,    |     | inverted  |     | ENGINE  |
 | fetch   |     | extract   |     | index     |     | rank &  |
 | robots  |     | terms     |     |           |     | serve   |
 +---------+     +-----------+     +-----------+     +---------+
  • Crawler/spider — follows links, obeys robots.txt, fetches pages.
  • Indexer — parses text, builds an inverted index (term → list of documents), stores metadata.
  • Ranking — relevance + quality signals: keyword matching, PageRank (link graph importance), freshness, user behaviour, spam penalties.
PR(p)=1−dN+d∑q∈B(p)PR(q)L(q)PR(p)=\frac{1-d}{N}+d\sum_{q \in B(p)}\frac{PR(q)}{L(q)}

3. Search Engine Registration Steps (Google example)

  1. Verify ownership in Google Search Console / Bing Webmaster Tools (DNS record, meta tag, or file upload).
  2. Submit XML sitemap (sitemap.xml) and individual URLs for indexing.
  3. Configure robots.txt — allow/disallow paths; check crawl errors, coverage, mobile usability.
  4. Add structured data (schema.org: Product, Organization, LocalBusiness) for rich results.
  5. Monitor Core Web Vitals, security issues, manual actions.
<!-- robots.txt -->
User-agent: *
Disallow: /cart/
Sitemap: https://example.com/sitemap.xml

4. Web Directories vs Search Engines

Aspect Web Directory Search Engine
Organisation human-edited categories algorithmic index
Inclusion submit to category, editor reviews automatic crawling
Example Yahoo! Directory (closed), DMOZ (closed), business chambers Google, Bing
Speed of update slow near real-time

Historically, e-commerce sites registered in both: directories for category-based discovery and engines for keyword search. Today the equivalent "directories" are business listings: Google Business Profile, Justdial, IndiaMART, Yellow Pages, industry marketplaces.

5. Local & Business Registration (modern directory practice)

  • Google Business Profile — NAP (Name, Address, Phone) consistency, categories, photos, reviews → local pack ranking.
  • Marketplaces/aggregators — Amazon, Flipkart, IndiaMART, Justdial, Zomato/Swiggy (domain specific).
  • Local SEO — citations, reviews, schema markup, service-area pages.

6. SEO Best Practices tied to Registration

  • Unique title/meta description per page; keyword in URL and H1.
  • Fast, mobile-friendly, HTTPS; canonical tags to avoid duplicates.
  • Internal linking so crawlers reach every product; avoid JS-only rendering without SSR.
  • Monitor analytics: indexed pages, impressions, CTR, position.

7. Exam Points

  • Explain how a search engine works (crawler, indexer, ranker) with a diagram — 10 marks (frequent).
  • Steps for registering a website with a search engine / Search Console & sitemaps — 5-7 marks.
  • Compare search engines and web directories — 5 marks.
  • Short notes: robots.txt, sitemap, PageRank, local SEO — 3-5 marks each.
