AI and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — Beginner-Friendly Notes

1. What SDGs Are (context)

17 UN goals (2015-2030) for people+planet — no poverty, zero hunger, health, education, clean energy, climate action, etc. AI is recognised as enabler but also risk for SDGs — syllabus wants you to link AI to SDGs.

2. AI → SDG Positive Map (memorise 6 high-yield links — exam favourite)

SDG AI Contribution (example) Module link
SDG 3 Health Medical image diagnosis, TB/Cancer screening, drug discovery CV + expert systems
SDG 4 Education Personalised tutoring (adapt to student), translation to mother tongue, automatic grading NLP + learning
SDG 2 Zero Hunger Precision agriculture: yield prediction, pest/disease detection, irrigation optimisation CV + robotics, India
SDG 7 Affordable Clean Energy Smart grids, demand forecasting, renewable integration, building energy optimisation Uncertainty + ML
SDG 13 Climate Action Climate modelling, deforestation monitoring via satellite, disaster early warning CV + prediction
SDG 11 Sustainable Cities Traffic optimisation, waste management routing, smart infrastructure health (civil) Search + robotics

Others: SDG 8 (decent work — reskilling, but risk), SDG 9 (industry/innovation — AI itself), SDG 5 (gender — bias mitigation).

3. India Context (bonus marks)

  • Health: AI TB screening at PHCs, retinal screening — reaches rural.
  • Agriculture: crop advisory apps, monsoon prediction.
  • Education: translation for NEP mother-tongue push, e-learning personalisation.
  • Energy: smart meters, grid balancing for solar.
  • Disaster: flood prediction (Brahmaputra, Ganga).

4. Risks to SDGs if AI Irresponsible

  • Widens inequality (SDG 10) if language/caste/region bias excludes groups.
  • Energy cost of large models harms SDG 13 unless green compute.
  • Job loss without reskilling harms SDG 8.

5. How to Answer "AI and SDGs" (template)

"AI supports SDG XX via [technique] for [task], e.g., [India example], while requiring responsible AI (fairness, sustainability) to avoid harming SDG YY."

Give 2-3 positive links + 1 risk + responsible AI mitigation.

6. One-Line Summary

AI accelerates SDGs — notably health, education, hunger, energy and climate — via tailored ML, CV and NLP applications, but must be governed for inclusion and sustainability to avoid undermining equity and climate goals.

7. Quick Self-Check

  1. Link one SDG to one AI technique in your branch.
  2. Why can AI both help and hinder SDG 13?
