Projections of Points and Lines Inclined to Both Planes

1. Projections of Points Across the Four Quadrants

A point in space is denoted by capital letter PP. Its projections are:

  • Top View (pp): Formed on the HP. The distance of pp from the XYXY line equals the distance of point PP from the VP.
  • Front View (p′p'): Formed on the VP. The distance of p′p' from the XYXY line equals the distance of point PP from the HP.
                2nd Quadrant | 1st Quadrant

2. Straight Lines: Essential Terms & Notations

When a straight line ABAB is inclined to both reference planes (HP and VP):

  • True Length (TLTL or LL): The actual 3D length of line segment ABAB.
  • True Inclinations:
    • θ\boldsymbol{\theta} = True angle made by the line with the Horizontal Plane (HP).
    • ϕ\boldsymbol{\phi} = True angle made by the line with the Vertical Plane (VP).
  • Apparent Lengths:
    • a′b′\boldsymbol{a'b'} or EL\boldsymbol{EL} = Elevation Length (length of Front View on VP).
    • ab\boldsymbol{ab} or PL\boldsymbol{PL} = Plan Length (length of Top View on HP).
  • Apparent Inclinations:
    • α\boldsymbol{\alpha} = Apparent angle made by the Front View with the XYXY line.
    • β\boldsymbol{\beta} = Apparent angle made by the Top View with the XYXY line.

Cardinal Relationships:

EL=a′b′=TL⋅cos⁡θPL=ab=TL⋅cos⁡ϕα>θandβ>ϕ(Apparent angles are always strictly greater than true angles)\begin{aligned} EL &= a'b' = TL \cdot \cos \theta \\ PL &= ab = TL \cdot \cos \phi \\ \alpha &> \theta \quad \text{and} \quad \beta > \phi \quad \text{(Apparent angles are always strictly greater than true angles)} \end{aligned}

The 12 Fundamental Parameters of a Line Problem:

  1. True Length (TLTL)
  2. True inclination with HP (θ\theta)
  3. True inclination with VP (ϕ\phi)
  4. Front View Length / Elevation Length (ELEL)
  5. Top View Length / Plan Length (PLPL)
  6. Apparent inclination of Front View (α\alpha)
  7. Apparent inclination of Top View (β\beta)
  8. Distance of point AA above HP / below HP
  9. Distance of point AA in front of VP / behind VP
  10. Distance of point BB above HP / below HP
  11. Distance of point BB in front of VP / behind VP
  12. Distance between end projectors (DD)

4. Standard Construction Procedure (Rotation Method)

Given: End AA position (hah_a above HP, dad_a in front of VP), True Length TLTL, θ\theta, and ϕ\phi.

  1. Draw Reference and End AA:
    • Draw horizontal reference line XYXY.
    • Draw vertical projector for AA: mark a′a' at distance hah_a above XYXY, and mark aa at distance dad_a below XYXY.
  2. True Inclination with HP (θ\theta):
    • Through a′a', draw a line at angle θ\theta to the horizontal of length equal to TLTL.
    • Label the endpoint b1′b_1'.
    • Draw a horizontal line through b1′b_1': this is the Locus of b′b'.
    • Project b1′b_1' vertically down to the horizontal line passing through aa to get point b1b_1.
    • The length ab1a b_1 is the Plan Length (PLPL).
  3. True Inclination with VP (ϕ\phi):
    • Through aa, draw a line at angle ϕ\phi to the horizontal of length equal to TLTL.
    • Label the endpoint b2b_2.
    • Draw a horizontal line through b2b_2: this is the Locus of bb.
    • Project b2b_2 vertically up to the horizontal line passing through a′a' to get point b2′b_2'.
    • The length a′b2′a' b_2' is the Elevation Length (ELEL).
  4. Drawing Final Projections:
    • With center a′a' and radius a′b2′=ELa' b_2' = EL, swing an arc to intersect the Locus of b′b' at point b′b'.
    • Join a′b′a'b' with a dark line. This is the Front View (angle with horizontal =α= \alpha).
    • With center aa and radius ab1=PLa b_1 = PL, swing an arc to intersect the Locus of bb at point bb.
    • Join abab with a dark line. This is the Top View (angle with horizontal =β= \beta).
  5. Universal Sanity Check:
    • The endpoints b′b' and bb must lie on the exact same vertical line (common end projector)!

5. Summary of Key Exam Points

  1. Elevation Length vs True Length: EL<TLEL < TL, PL<TLPL < TL.
  2. Angles Inequality: α>θ\alpha > \theta and β>ϕ\beta > \phi.
  3. Collinear Projector Rule: The projectors joining a′a' with aa, and b′b' with bb, must always be strictly perpendicular to XYXY.
  4. Parallelism Rule: If a line is parallel to HP, its front view is parallel to XYXY, and its top view shows the true length (PL=TLPL = TL).
  5. Sum of Angles (θ+ϕ\theta + \phi): In any real oblique line, θ+ϕ<90∘\theta + \phi < 90^\circ. If θ+ϕ=90∘\theta + \phi = 90^\circ, the line lies in a profile plane.
