Technical Vocabulary Development

1. What Technical Vocabulary Is

Technical vocabulary = subject-specific words used precisely in engineering/science (e.g., algorithm, torque, viscosity, bandwidth, corrosion, entropy), distinct from general vocabulary (e.g., nice, big). In engineering communication, precise technical terms avoid ambiguity.

2. Why It Matters for Engineers (B.Tech)

  • Precision: "The beam deflects" vs "The beam bends a little" — first is measurable, second vague.
  • Conciseness: One term encapsulates concept (e.g., resonance instead of "vibration at natural frequency").
  • Professional credibility: correct use signals competence; wrong use confuses.

3. How to Develop Technical Vocabulary (exam list — 5 methods)

Method How / Example
1. Reading technical texts Read textbooks, IEEE papers, manuals; note new terms in context, not isolated
2. Using technical dictionaries/glossaries ISRO glossary, McGraw-Hill; check exact definition, unit, symbol
3. Contextual learning (collocations) Learn phrase, not word: tensile strength, shear stress, cloud computing (not tensile alone)
4. Word formation (roots, affixes) Break into morphemes: thermo- (heat) + -dynamics → thermodynamics (next topics)
5. Active use Use in lab reports, presentations, discussions; flashcards/Anki with example sentence, visual association

4. Worked Practice

General: "Make the code better" → Technical: "Optimize the algorithm for time complexity O(n log n) and reduce memory footprint."

Student picks 10 terms/week: "ductility, malleability, annealing, telecommunication, microcontroller" → write definition + one sentence + diagram.

Check: Do not confuse "effect" (noun, result) vs "affect" (verb, influence) — technical precision matters.

5. Exam Points

  • Define technical vocabulary and why it differs from general — 3-5 marks, very frequent.
  • List 4–5 methods to develop (reading, dictionaries, collocations, word formation, active use) — 5 marks, very frequent (the most common vocabulary development question).
  • Give 3 technical terms with correct use in sentence — 5 marks, frequent.
