Essay Writing, Email Writing

1. What They Are (two important writing tasks)

Type Purpose Characteristics
Essay Extended piece (300–500 words) on topic to present argument, analysis logically Title, Introduction (hook + thesis), Body (3–4 paras with topic sentences, evidence, examples), Conclusion (summary + closing thought); coherence, cohesion (linkers)
Email Quick, formal digital communication for professional exchange (replaces letter for speed) Subject, Salutation, Body (concise, 3-paras), Closing, Signature; formal tone for business

2. Essay — Structure (exam expects to write one)

Example: "Role of Technology in Education"

  • Introduction: define technology in education, thesis: "Technology has transformed education by...".
  • Body para 1: Access — online courses, MOOCs.
  • Body para 2: Interactivity — simulations, labs.
  • Body para 3: Challenges — digital divide, distraction.
  • Conclusion: summarize, balanced view, future.

Tips: unity (one idea per para), coherence (however, therefore), correct grammar, word limit.

3. Email — Format (formal email — exam expects exact header)

From: sender@email.com
To: recipient@email.com
CC: cc@email.com (optional)
Date: 15 Oct 2026 (auto)
Subject: Request for Leave on 16 Oct

Respected Sir,

Body: I am writing to request... (2–3 short paras, polite, to the point, mention attachment if any)

Thanking you.

Yours faithfully,
[Name]
[Designation, Contact]

Types: formal (to authority, job, inquiry) vs informal (to friend).

Etiquette: clear subject, greeting, concise body, polite close, proofread, no CAPS, attach with mention.

4. Worked Checks

Essay intro: "Technology has revolutionized..." vs "Nowadays technology is..." — first hook better.

Email subject: "Leave Application for 16 Oct - Roll 123" → clear; not "Hello".

Email body: "Please find attached the report." → mention attachment.

5. Exam Points

  • Give essay structure (Introduction, Body, Conclusion) and write 150-word essay on given topic — 7-10 marks, very frequent (almost certain to ask one essay).
  • Give formal email format (Subject, Salutation, Body, Closing) and write email (e.g., to HOD for leave, to HR for job) — 7-10 marks, very frequent (the most common email question).
  • Distinguish formal vs informal email — 3-5 marks, frequent.
  • Mention 7C's in both — 3 marks.
