Two Functions of a Trade Union [2 Marks]

Definition brief: Trade Union is an organized association of workers formed to protect and promote their common interests.

Any two functions:

1. Economic / Collective Bargaining Function: Negotiates with management for higher wages, bonus, allowances, better working conditions, job security and social security.
2. Welfare Function: Provides education, legal aid, medical, housing, recreational facilities and safety measures for members and families.

Other valid functions (any two accepted):

• Protective / Militant: Defends workers against victimization, unfair dismissal, exploitation - files grievances, organizes strikes legally.
• Social / Political: Creates sense of solidarity, participates in policy formulation, supports labour legislation, promotes cooperation between labor and management.
• Fraternal / Communication: Acts as channel between management & workers, promotes industrial harmony.

ILO classifies as: Militant, Fraternal, Social-Political.
