Single and double slit

1. Single Slit (Fraunhofer) — Width aa

Plane wave hits slit −a/2≤x≤a/2 -a/2 ≤ x ≤ a/2, far-field amplitude:

U(θ)∝∫−a/2a/2e−ikxsinθdx=a⋅[sinα/α]U(θ) ∝ ∫_{-a/2}^{a/2} e^{-ik x sinθ} dx = a·[sinα/α]

,

α=(πasinθ)/λα = (π a sinθ)/λ

Intensity:

I(θ)=I0[sinα/α]2I(θ)= I_0 [sinα/α]²
  • Minima (dark):
sinα=0,α=nπ⇒asinθ=nλ,n=±1,±2,...sinα=0, α=nπ ⇒ a sinθ = nλ , n=±1,±2,...

(not n=0n=0 — central max there)

  • Maxima: approximate at
tanα=αtanα=α

⇒ α≈1.43π,2.46πα≈1.43π,2.46π; central max (θ=0θ=0) intensity I0I_0, side maxima ~4.5%,1.6% falling.

  • Width: central max spans −λ/a<sinθ<λ/a-λ/a < sinθ < λ/a (first minima). If white light, colours separate.

2. Double Slit — Two Slits Width aa, Separation dd (centre-centre)

Amplitude = single-slit envelope × two-slit interference:

U∝[sinα/α]⋅2cosβU ∝ [sinα/α]·2cosβ

,

β=(πdsinθ)/λβ=(π d sinθ)/λ

Intensity:

I(θ)=4I0cos2β⋅[sinα/α]2I(θ)=4I_0 cos²β ·[sinα/α]²
  • Interference maxima (bright fringes):
dsinθ=mλ,m=0,±1,...d sinθ = mλ , m=0,±1,...

(cos=±1)

  • Diffraction minima (envelope zeros, missing orders):
asinθ=nλa sinθ=nλ

⇒ if ratio d/ad/a integer, some interference maxima coincide with diffraction minima and are missing (suppressed).

Single slit: broad envelope, first minima at a sinθ=λ, central intensity I0
Double slit: sharp cos² fringes inside same envelope, fringe spacing Δ(sinθ)=λ/d (finer if d>a), envelope controls brightness
If a≪d, many interference fringes inside central envelope; if a≈d, few.

5. Exam Points

  • Derive I=I0[sinα/α]2I=I_0[sinα/α]² and minima asinθ=nλa sinθ=nλ for single slit — 7 marks, very frequent.
  • Derive double slit I=4I0cos2β[sinα/α]2I=4I_0 cos²β[sinα/α]², maxima dsinθ=mλd sinθ=mλ and missing orders when d/ad/a integer — 7-10 marks, very frequent.
  • Sketch intensity vs θθ showing envelope — 5 marks, frequent.
