Introduction
1. Why This Module Exists — From Physics to Technology
This module connects quantum physics (band theory) to devices and nanotechnology: how materials' electrical behaviour (metal vs semiconductor vs insulator) arises from bands, and how nanoscale size creates new properties.
2. Roadmap
- Material types (metal, semiconductor, insulator) by band gap.
- Semiconductors: intrinsic/extrinsic, P/N, drift/diffusion, Fermi level, devices (photodiode, transistor, LED, Hall, solar).
- Nano: what changes at nanoscale (surface-to-volume, quantum confinement) and classification 0D/1D/2D/3D.
3. Why It Matters for Engineers
All electronics, optoelectronics, energy harvesting (solar), sensing (Hall) rely on semiconductor physics; nano is next scaling (quantum dots for displays, nanowires for sensors).
4. Exam Approach
This introductory topic often asks: "Classify materials as metal/semiconductor/insulator based on band structure — draw diagrams."
5. Exam Points
- State module scope — 2-3 marks.
- Draw band diagrams for metal/semiconductor/insulator (next topic) — 5 marks, frequent.
