Electromagnetic waves

1. From Maxwell to Waves (free space, ρ=0,J=0ρ=0,J=0)

Maxwell's curl equations:

∇×E=−∂B/∂t,∇×B=μ0ε0∂E/∂t∇×E=-∂B/∂t , ∇×B=μ0ε0 ∂E/∂t

Taking ∇×(∇×E)∇×(∇×E) with vector identity ∇×(∇×E)=∇(∇⋅E)−∇2E∇×(∇×E)=∇(∇·E)-∇²E and ∇⋅E=0∇·E=0 gives:

∇2E=μ0ε0∂2E/∂t2∇²E = μ0ε0 ∂²E/∂t²

Same for BB: ∇2B=μ0ε0∂2B/∂t2∇²B = μ0ε0 ∂²B/∂t² — wave equations with speed:

c=1/√(μ0ε0)=3×108c =1/√(μ0 ε0)=3×10^8

m/s

So light is EM wave, predicted before Hertz's experiment.

2. Plane Wave Solution

For wave propagating along +z+z with EE along xx:

E(z,t)=E0cos(kz−ωt)x^,B(z,t)=(E0/c)cos(kz−ωt)y^E(z,t)=E_0 cos(kz-ωt) \hat{x} , B(z,t)= (E_0/c) cos(kz-ωt) \hat{y}

with

k=2π/λ,ω=2πf,c=ω/k,k=ω√(μ0ε0)k=2π/λ, ω=2πf, c=ω/k, k=ω√(μ0ε0)

Properties:

  • Transverse: E⊥B⊥kE⊥B⊥k (propagation), E×BE×B along kk (right-hand).
  • In phase: EE and BB peak together (free space, in phase).
  • Ratio:
E0/B0=c,B0=E0/cE_0/B_0 = c, B_0 = E_0/c
  • Impedance of free space:
Z0=E0/H0=μ0c=√(μ0/ε0)≈377Z_0 = E_0/H_0 = μ0 c = √(μ0/ε0)≈377

Ω.

3. Energy and Momentum (preview Poynting)

Energy stored u=1/2(ε0E2+B2/μ0)u =1/2(ε0E² + B²/μ0); for plane wave ε0E2=B2/μ0ε0E² = B²/μ0 ⇒

u=ε0E2u = ε0E²

instantaneous. Time-averaged

⟨u⟩=1/2ε0E02⟨u⟩ =1/2 ε0 E_0²

.

4. Worked Checks

(a) Frequency f=1 GHz: λ=c/f=0.3 m, k=2π/0.3≈20.9 m⁻¹ ✓

(b) E0=10 V/m ⇒ B0=33 nT, H0=E0/Z0≈26.5 mA/m ✓

(c) Show E×B direction is propagation: \hat{x}×\hat{y}=\hat{z} ✓
