AC Circuit Parameters: Impedance

1. What Impedance Is

Impedance (ZZ, ohm ΩΩ) = complex opposition to AC current, generalizing resistance RR to include reactance XX from LL and CC:

Z=R+jX=∣Z∣∠θZ = R + jX = |Z|∠θ
  • Resistance:
ZR=RZ_R = R

(real, no phase)

  • Inductive reactance:
ZL=jXL=jωLZ_L = jX_L = jωL

,

XL=ωL=2πfLX_L=ωL=2πfL
  • Capacitive reactance:
ZC=−jXC=1/(jωC)=−j/(ωC)Z_C = -jX_C = 1/(jωC)= -j/(ωC)

, magnitude

XC=1/(ωC)X_C=1/(ωC)

Magnitude

∣Z∣=√(R2+X2)|Z|=√(R²+X²)

, phase

θ=tan−1(X/R)θ=tan^{-1}(X/R)

(θ>0θ>0 inductive lagging, θ<0θ<0 capacitive leading).

Ohm's law for AC phasors:

V~=I~⋅Z\tilde{V}= \tilde{I}·Z

with ZZ complex.

2. Why Complex

jj captures 90° phase shift: inductor voltage leads current 90°, capacitor lags 90°. RR has 0°.

3. Series Combinations

  • RR+LL series:
Z=R+jωLZ = R + jωL

,

∣Z∣=√(R2+XL2)|Z|=√(R²+X_L²)

,

θ=tan−1(XL/R)θ=tan^{-1}(X_L/R)

lagging.

  • RR+CC series:
Z=R−j/(ωC)Z = R - j/(ωC)

,

θ=−tan−1(XC/R)θ= -tan^{-1}(X_C/R)

leading.

  • RR+LL+CC series:
Z=R+j(XL−XC)Z = R + j(X_L - X_C)

, resonance when

XL=XCX_L = X_C

⇒

Z=RZ=R

(pure resistive, θ=0θ=0, minimum ∣Z∣|Z|).

4. Worked Examples

(a) Series RL: R=3Ω, X_L=4Ω ⇒ Z=3+j4=5∠53.1° Ω, I= V/Z ⇒ I lags V 53.1° ✓

(b) Series RC: R=4Ω, X_C=3Ω ⇒ Z=4 -j3=5∠-36.9° ⇒ I leads V 36.9° ✓

(c) Series RLC R=10Ω, L=0.1H, C=100µF at f=50Hz: X_L=31.4Ω, X_C=31.8Ω ⇒ Z≈10 -j0.4≈10∠-2.3° near resonance (almost resistive) ✓

(d) Need resonance f0=1/(2π√(LC)) ⇒ where X_L=X_C ⇒ Z=R minimal, current maximal.

5. Exam Points

  • Define Z=R+jXZ=R+jX, XL=ωLX_L=ωL, XC=1/ωCX_C=1/ωC — 5-7 marks, very frequent (almost certain).
  • Show ZZ magnitude/phase and V=I⋅ZV=I·Z — 5 marks, frequent.
  • Compute ZZ for RL/RC/RLC series — 7 marks, very frequent.
  • Explain resonance XL=XCX_L=X_C ⇒ Z=RZ=R — 3-5 marks, frequent.
