overview of digital and analog integrated circuits
1. What an Integrated Circuit (IC) Is
IC = miniaturized circuit with many transistors, diodes, R, C fabricated on single silicon chip (die) and packaged (DIP, SMD). Replaces discrete circuits ⇒ small, reliable, low power, cheap.
2. Two Families — Analog vs Digital ICs
| Feature | Analog IC | Digital IC |
|---|---|---|
| Signal type | Continuous voltage/current (e.g., sine, varying) | Discrete 0/1 (binary) |
| Function | Amplify, filter, regulate (e.g., op-amp, regulator, ADC/DAC) | Logic, memory, processor (e/b gates, flip-flops, µP) |
| Examples | Op-amp 741, timer 555, regulator 7805, comparator LM339, audio amplifier | 7400 NAND, 7447 decoder, 74151 MUX, 7474 flip-flop, 8085 µP, memory 6264 |
| Design focus | Linearity, gain, noise, offset | Speed, power, density, noise margin (TTL vs CMOS) |
| Power | Often higher static (class A) | CMOS near zero static (only dynamic) |
Often mixed-signal ICs combine both (e.g., ADC with analog front + digital logic, 555).
3. IC Classification by Integration Scale (for context)
| Scale | Gates/Transistors | Example |
|---|---|---|
| SSI | <10 gates | 7400 (NAND) |
| MSI | 10–100 | 74151 (MUX), 7447 |
| LSI | 100–10k | 8085 µP, memory 1K |
| VLSI | 10k–1M | 8086, 6264 RAM |
| ULSI | >1M | Modern CPU, SoC |
4. Technologies
- Bipolar (TTL, ECL): fast but high power.
- MOS (NMOS, CMOS): CMOS dominates now (low power, high density).
5. Worked Checks
Need to amplify tiny sensor voltage 10mV to 1V ⇒ analog IC op-amp 741 with gain 100.
Need to decode BCD to 7-seg ⇒ digital IC 7447.
Need 5V regulated? Use analog regulator IC 7805 (next topic, but analog).
6. Exam Points
- Define IC as miniaturized on silicon chip — 3 marks, frequent.
- Distinguish analog (continuous, amplify) vs digital (binary, logic) with 2 examples each — 5-7 marks, very frequent (the most common overview question).
- Give analog (741,7805) and digital (7400,8085) examples — 3-5 marks, frequent.
- Mention SSI to VLSI scale — 3 marks.
