Applications (of Artificial Intelligence)
1. How AI Applications Are Grouped
Whatever the industry, an AI application usually does one of five jobs:
- Perception — recognise images, speech, text, faces, objects.
- Prediction / classification — forecast a value or place an item in a class (fraud or not? price next month?).
- Generation — create text, images, audio, video or code.
- Decision and optimisation — choose the best route, price, schedule or control action.
- Interaction — converse with, assist or tutor a human (chatbots, assistants, recommenders).
2. Applications by Sector
| Sector | AI application | Technology used | Benefit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Healthcare | Medical imaging diagnosis (X-ray, MRI, retina), early disease detection, drug discovery, epidemic modelling, virtual health assistants, robot-assisted surgery, hospital bed/queue optimisation | CNNs, deep learning, NLP, optimisation | Earlier diagnosis, fewer errors, faster drug research, better use of scarce doctors |
| Agriculture | Crop-disease detection from leaf photos, yield prediction, soil/weather advisory, precision irrigation and fertiliser, drone spraying, livestock monitoring | Computer vision, regression, sensors/IoT | Higher yield, less water and pesticide, timely advisory to farmers |
| Education | Adaptive learning paths, automated grading, doubt-solving chatbots, content recommendation, plagiarism and AI-text detection, proctoring, personalised practice (e.g. question banks and study apps) | NLP, recommendation, knowledge tracing | Personalised pace, instant feedback, less teacher drudgery |
| Finance & banking | Fraud detection on cards/UPI, credit scoring for the unbanked, algorithmic trading, risk assessment, robo-advisory, chatbots for support, AML monitoring | Supervised + anomaly detection, time series, RL | Losses prevented, faster approvals, 24×7 service |
| Transport | Self-driving/ADAS vehicles, traffic prediction and adaptive signals, ride matching, route optimisation, predictive maintenance of fleets, licence-plate recognition | CNN + sensor fusion, RL, forecasting | Fewer accidents, less congestion, lower cost |
| Manufacturing | Visual defect inspection, predictive maintenance, demand-driven production planning, robotic assembly, digital twins | Vision, time-series, RL, simulation | Less downtime, better quality, lower inventory |
| Retail & e-commerce | Recommendations, demand forecasting, dynamic pricing, visual search, chatbot support, warehouse robots | Collaborative filtering, gradient boosting, vision | Higher sales, less stock-out/waste, better customer experience |
| Media & entertainment | Content recommendation, automatic subtitling and dubbing, content moderation, generative art/music/video, game AI | NLP, generative models, RL | Engagement, cheaper localisation, faster creation |
| Security & law | Face recognition, video analytics and crowd monitoring, cyber-threat detection, forensic triage, deepfake detection | CNN, anomaly detection | Faster response, better evidence handling |
| Government / public services | Citizen-service chatbots, welfare-scheme targeting, traffic and pollution management, disaster prediction, translation of gazettes | NLP, prediction, CV | Transparency, reach, timely action |
| Science & research | Protein-structure prediction (AlphaFold), drug molecule design, astronomy (galaxy classification, exoplanets), climate and ocean modelling, materials discovery | Deep learning, generative models, simulation | Discovery speed-ups impossible by hand |
| Daily life & accessibility | Voice assistants, smart keyboards, spam filters, smart replies, photo search, speech-to-text, image description for the blind, navigation ETAs | NLP, speech, vision | Convenience and independence |
3. Familiar Examples Around Us
Google Maps' ETA and traffic colours · Gmail's spam filter and Smart Compose · YouTube/Netflix/Spotify recommendations · Amazon/Flipkart "customers also bought" · UPI and card fraud alerts · Ola/Uber ride matching and surge pricing · Zomato/Swiggy delivery-time estimates · face unlock and Aadhaar face authentication · Siri/Alexa/Google Assistant · Bhashini-style translation of Indian languages · AI advisories to farmers (Kisan call centres, crop insurance surveys with satellite data) · medical imaging tools in Indian hospitals · plagiarism/AI-detection in universities · ChatGPT-style assistants for study and coding.
4. Benefits and Challenges
| Benefits | Challenges |
|---|---|
| Handles scale and repetition that humans cannot | Bias — models inherit and amplify data bias (hiring, credit, policing) |
| Accuracy on well-defined perception tasks (often superhuman) | Privacy — training needs data, sometimes sensitive and personal |
| 24×7 availability and consistent output | Explainability — "black box" decisions are hard to justify in medicine or law |
| Personalisation at population scale | Job displacement and the need for reskilling |
| Detects patterns invisible to humans (fraud, disease) | Hallucination, drift and adversarial attacks — outputs can be confidently wrong |
| Enables accessibility and new products | Cost/energy of training; data quality and availability |
| Frees people for judgement and creativity | Digital divide, regulation and accountability questions |
5. What Makes an AI Application Work in Practice
Good data (clean, labelled, representative) · an appropriate model and the right performance metric for the business goal · deployment as a API or batch pipeline inside existing systems · monitoring for drift and degraded accuracy · human-in-the-loop review for risky decisions · clear accountability, privacy safeguards and compliance with data-protection law. AI succeeds as a system — data plus model plus process plus governance — not as an isolated algorithm.
6. Exam Points
