Human being as a co-existence of the sentient 'Self' and the material 'Body'

1. The Two Distinct Realities in a Human

Human being = co-existence of Self (conscious) + Body (material):

Aspect Self (I) Body
Nature conscious (sentient), non-material material, physico-chemical
Needs happiness, respect, trust (continuous) — fulfilled by right understanding + feeling physical facility (food, shelter) — limited quantity
Activity desiring, thinking, expecting (continuous) breathing, circulation etc. (material)
Instrument knows, decides, feels is the instrument for Self to express, acted upon
Time span continuous temporary (birth–death)

2. Co-existence Means

Self and Body are distinct but together; Self uses Body as instrument (like driver uses vehicle). Information exchange: Self gives intention (e.g., "raise hand"), Body executes via nervous system; Body gives sensation (e.g., hunger) to Self.

  • Nurturing: Body needs food (nurturing) and protection; Self needs happiness (understanding + feeling).
  • Health: Body's health influences Self's feeling (pain distracts), but Self can still be happy with right understanding even if Body uncomfortable (and vice versa).

3. Common Mistakes Due to Confusion

  • Treating Self need as Body need (e.g., trying to get happiness via tasty food alone) ⇒ fails.
  • Treating Body need as unlimited like Self's happiness ⇒ over-consumption, Body harmed (obesity).

4. Implications

  • Right understanding about Self vs Body clarifies what to do for health (right food, exercise, rest, not over-indulgence) and what to do for happiness (right feeling, not just facility).

5. Worked Checks

Need check: Do I need food for Self or Body? Body.

Happiness check: Will 10 kg extra wheat make Self more happy beyond required? No.

Body as instrument: I (Self) decide to study → Body (eyes, brain) executes.

6. Exam Points

  • Define human as co-existence of sentient Self and material Body with table — 7 marks, very frequent (the core distinction question).
  • List needs of Self (continuous happiness) vs Body (limited facility) — 5-7 marks, very frequent (almost certain).
  • Show Body as instrument of Self — 5 marks, frequent.
  • Give implications for health and happiness — 3-5 marks.
