Competence in professional ethics
1. What Competence Means Here
Competence in professional ethics = ability to do the profession correctly (skill) + ethically (values) together. It is not just technical competence (how to code, build bridge) but ethical competence (should we build it? for whom? within nature's capacity?).
2. Two Components
| Component | Description | Example (software engineer) |
|---|---|---|
| Professional skill | Technical know-how (how to do) | Writes efficient code, designs secure system |
| Ethical competence | Right understanding + values guiding skill (what/why to do, for whom, how to use) | Chooses privacy-preserving design, people-friendly features, refuses to make addictive trap |
True competence = skill + right understanding ⇒ humanistic production.
3. Why Both Needed
- Skill without ethics ⇒ harm (efficient but exploitative — e.g., efficient data theft).
- Ethics without skill ⇒ inability (want to help but cannot build).
4. Worked Illustration
Competent engineer for rural app: Skill = builds offline-first app; Ethics = ensures it respects farmer's need (low data, local language) and not exploit.
Incompetent ethically: builds addictive game for kids efficiently but harms.
5. Exam Points
- Define competence as skill + ethical values — 5 marks, very frequent.
- Distinguish professional skill vs ethical competence (table) — 5 marks, very frequent.
- Give example of ethical competence in your branch — 5 marks, frequent (e.g., CSE: data privacy).
